With Vintage Tractors

Offer vintage tractor drivers a plot of good Herefordshire soil to cultivate and they will play happily for hours. For those without an implement, there were some to borrow. No wonder drivers look forward to Michael Patrick's Marlbrook Vintage Working Day.

At Llangattock, the well respected Ploughing Match offered extra choices in 2000. A good selection of John Deere tractors were attracted by host Frank Sutton's reputation. For those not competition ploughing there was plenty of ground for commercial work. This produced some memorable sights and sounds.

The special sledge track tested tractors sheer pulling ability. It was revealing how different tractors responded to the increasing loads. Some did unexpectedly well.

Don Macmillan recounts how the lugging ability of a 'D' led him to a lifetime of working with John Deere tractors. Nearly 60 years later his happy smile shows that putting a 'D' type to work can still be an enjoyable experience.
